If I had to name the thing that struck me the most about Lesibu Grand, the answer would be their catchy, energetic songwriting. A close second, however, would be the way they use that writing in service to varying social and political issues. In the band’s view, a memorable hook is always worth pursuing. But if you can somehow tie that same hook to, say, female empowerment or America’s collective failures, the results can be both infectious and powerful.

On their latest video and single, however, the group opts for a far more light-hearted approach. Riding a funky bassline and an array of motivational slogans—“Find it! Feel it! Do it! Hustle!“—the whimsical “Exercise” takes aim at the classic ‘80s fitness video. Featuring little of what anyone would call lyrics, the song instead sprints by on pure fun and blood-pumping adrenaline alone. For those who’ve grown used to Lesibu Grand’s caustic missives, the change in mood is a bit of an unexpected turn. For the band, though, it was a switch they intentionally sought out.

“I guess you could say we wanted to get happy,” says bass player John “Hutch” Renaud. “With ‘Exercise,’ we chose to poke a little fun at the ‘80s fitness video craze. We watched a bunch of them and we noticed that in most cases they are barely breaking a sweat. Instead, they are just showing off their bodies and having fun with each other. Which is perfectly fine, of course. So we decided to join in their spirit and get into the vibe ourselves.”

Directed by Nathan DuConge, the video is less parody and more of a surreal deconstruction of the VHS aesthetic that defined the genre. Vocalist Tyler Simone-Molton plays the ever-smiling instructor, kicking, squatting, and flexing while offering the audience unending positive affirmation. Meanwhile, various workout figures, both past and present, join in on the fun and mug for the camera. Much as it was in its heyday, there is more posturing than actual exercise happening. But hey, who cares as long as you look good, right?
