The new album from CHEW came out yesterday and the nine-song effort offers some of the band’s wildest and most inspired music to date. If you have yet to spend time with the trio’s eclectic stew of psychedelic explorations, now would be a great time to start. HORSES finds the group at perhaps the peak of their powers unleashing one astonishing groove after another. From acid-fried freakouts and weirdo synth jams to noisy pop bangers and blistering prog-rock virtuosity, the LP delivers all that and then some.

If you find yourself itching for a taste, the lead single and title track encapsulates just about everything that makes CHEW so fun and interesting. Crushing riffs, surreal samples, heady psych-rock detours, Sarah Wilson’s frenetic drumming—they all combine to create an aural experience that is artful and exhilarating. Even in their most discordant and experimental moments, the band can’t help but sound funky and propulsive. It’s a hell of a thing, really, and much of what makes the trio’s music so approachable despite their eager willingness to veer off into unpredictable tangents.

Created by Riley Morgan, the video is equally mind-bending, thrusting the viewer into an abstract world that is forever mutating. As light and color bend and shift in random patterns, both nature and humanity’s lust for power are subverted. Finding meaning in any of it is likely beside the point. The best thing to do is to strap in, hold on tight, and embrace the beauty within the chaos.
