Formed in April of 2025, the Lobotomy Party serve up a lacerating mix of driving alt-rock and jagged post-punk with a sinister edge. At least that’s the impression I get from listening to the band’s debut single “Basement,” which writhes and seethes with coiled intensity. It’s a track seemingly meant to unnerve and thrill at the same time like hammering on the gas down a dark stretch of road. Unsurprisingly, the song has become something of a fan favorite, closing out the group’s live sets in a squall of gnarled riffage.
Founded by former Fantomen lead guitarist Alan Poole, the Lobotomy Party brings together Fantomen’s Matt McDaniel on bass along with newcomers Luis Alberto Simauchi (drums) and Matt Short (guitar). With Poole tackling primary vocal duties, the band has spent the last 18 months refining their sound and performing as often as possible. Along the way, the group enlisted producer and engineer Kris Sampson (Ultra Lights, Omni) to record a batch of material to be released throughout the remainder of the year.
As a debut, “Basement” effectively hints at the band’s past while thrusting forward a new vision. Lyrically, the track offers glimpses of the horror-filled backdrops that often framed Fantomen’s music. Sung from the point of view of a prisoner desperately seeking to break free, the song takes on almost a theatrical quality (“Night! Terrifying night! / Coming are the hours of black and blight,” Poole exclaims at one point). But whereas Fantomen used the terror encased within certain myths and the supernatural as vehicle in and of itself, the Lobotomy Party appear more interested in tracing that terror back to human psychology as a metaphor for something deeper.
“‘Basement’ represents the cycle of violence that lives in the lifeblood of humanity,” Poole explains. “The song is a story of a prisoner that only escapes by drinking from the cup of violence and becoming a hunter. A brief glance into light shining through the cracks of his prison hints at a better way of living, but is rejected in favor of the immediate relief that violence brings.”
