For a song that’s explicitly about the horrors of our dystopian times, “World’s End” has quite the energizing kick. Sure, Adria Stembridge sounds bitter and snide, and the lyrics hold no quarter for the cruel brutes and “grey suit zombies” wielding power. But damn that rumbling bass and stabbing beat, icy as it is, make you want to leap through the fog and dance your pain away. Admittedly, this is somewhat of a default state of being for Tears for the Dying. The Athens group wield their visceral blend of goth, post-punk, and deathrock more like an illuminating torch than a darkened shroud. This is a band, after all, whose website promises “Hope for a dying world.”

“World’s End” makes good on that pledge. It also pours plenty of vitriol on our dying empire and the cowards that enable it. With that, we’re reminded of two things. The first it that hope shouldn’t be passive. Action matters most. The second, I will add, comes with a caveat: Never stop dancing, but always keep a knife sharp and ready.
