It’s been four years since Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun released QUADS, the electro rock foursome’s last record, and in that long stretch between they’ve quietly released a pair of singles, but not much else. A portion of that inactivity can be attributed to guitarist Cregg Gibson, who took a leave of absence from the group, but soon returned with renewed fire in his belly and some new riffs in tow. This morning we’re excited to bring you one of the initial results of that rekindled vigor—the dynamic, fist-pumping anthem “Flashlight Searches.”

For TTMTTS, the single marks a return to the fervent, guitar-driven dance rock that defined the band’s earliest and most productive periods. There are definite shades of Metric’s glossy synth-pop coursing through the song’s infectious grooves, but the band’s noisy grit helps add a visceral dimension to the track, even as mammoth hooks burst across your speakers. Overall, it’s a roaring effort and a triumphant return for a band that’s well aware that the best way to step way from the past is to continue moving fearlessly forward.

“‘Flashlight Searches’ developed from the first riff Cregg started playing when he came back to the band after taking a short hiatus,” says keyboardist and vocalist Lauren Gipson. “We were pumped to start back with him, especially digging back into our big guitar beginnings. The lyrics wrote themselves very quickly. It’s basically about not being able to go back. You can’t see the whole picture until the times past and you have to be okay with your decisions. If you’re not, it doesn’t really matter… they’re already decided.”

Give it a listen below.

For now, the band has no plans to release another record, but that doesn’t mean the group will remain idle. According to Gipson, TTMTTS will continue their recent trend of churning out singles, with more cuts soon to come. “You can expect as many new songs as we can write, record, and release in 2018 and beyond,” she says. “As long as the drive to make new stuff exists in us, we gonna keep pestering people with releases.”
