Julianna Money has always maintained an infatuation with exploring the intersection of romance and the occult. A kind of shimmering mysticism surrounds their work which thrums with quiet intensity. There is mystery and gloom, but also a raw, steadfast clarity borne from deep contemplation. The result are often aching songs where vulnerability and wisdom intermingle within Money’s moody croon.

It’s what makes “In Love for a Day,” the second single from Money’s forthcoming Eclipse double LP (complete with opposing Light and Shadow sides), so compelling. While their albums have often been infused with ballads, nothing quite parallels the ephemeral heartache captured on this track. It’s a mesmerizing, elongated figure surrounded by harp-like arpeggios, mellotron flutes, and tender string swells courtesy of Parry Staley of Me Me Me Trio. Meanwhile, Money’s dreamy vocals gracefully arabesque through the lightly ornamented track.

Or at least that’s how it seems at first blush. Money isn’t exactly an artist who dwells on platitudes. The courtly simplicity of the waltz suggests there’s more going on under the surface of this song. That said, the poignant musings of “In Love for a Day” reveal how a brush with love—even just a quick one—can change everything. There’s joy, yes, but it’s also tinged with the specter of what could have been and the gnawing sense of a fickle heart.

“I actually wrote [the song] a few years ago in Athens about a very brief romantic entanglement that had me momentarily gutted,” Money reveals. “I think in writing the song I was honoring the strength of my feelings at the time but also reflecting on how kind of silly it is to fall for someone so quickly; within a couple of weeks I’d moved on. This is the first single from the Light side of Eclipse and I think it aptly represents some of the themes explored therein, the levity of it being a stark contrast to the Shadow side as you would imagine.”
