Last month, Nag surreptitiously dropped some serious tracks, contributing “Eye Level” and “Surfer” to a split on Space Taker Records with Baltimore punks Lip. “Eye Level” starts out with a stomping riff that feels surprisingly chill, but the outro features the spastic lo-fi energy the band channels at live shows, as well as some wild spacey effects. Meanwhile, “Surfer” comes out kicking with the same quasi-skate punk vibe frontman Brannon Greene channels in longtime project Predator. I reached out to Greene about the tracks and he informed me that not only is “Surfer” a total jam, it’s a reference to previous drummer and ATL punk messiah Ryan Fetter’s hatred of nature. Apparently the genesis for the song was Fetter’s awakening, “I’ve been there… I’ve done that… I’m over it dude.”
