Jason Howell’s thoughtful music investigates the day-to-day emotions of big setbacks and quiet victories. Ever seeking, his characters are immediately endearing with complex stories that are delivered with cinematic scope. Taken from his new LP, Our Love Unto Death, “Cathy” is a heart-on-your-sleeve weeper where the introspective protagonist declares, “It doesn’t matter if you love me / It doesn’t matter where we go / Just drive.” Howell’s sparse delivery and delicate dynamic shifts turn what’s ostensibly a folk song into an expansive and dense composition.

Although Howell has recently been working out of New York, his roots are still planted in Atlanta, and he has plans to return soon. In addition to the new LP, he is currently working on a new record with producer Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders Co. Howell’s layered songwriting and vibrant eye for detail music finds great company in the music of Pedro the Lion and David Ramirez.
