It has been over 10 years since Withered released their first record, and while their career has been marked by notable spans of inactivity, it somehow never seems to dull their brutal attack. Now, the death metal four-piece is back with another four-minute blast of torrential heaviness.

The new single “Distort, Engulf” is further proof that the passage of time is a moot point for any band with the ability to rattle skulls and crush riffs like these four metal masterminds. The swirling brutality of the track, which whips the listener around into a cosmic frenzy, is both visceral and relentless. The intricacy buried within the violence is what makes it stick, tempering the immediacy of the track with a darkness that only rears its head after multiple listens.

The band’s upcoming full-length, Grief Relic, will be the first with a shuffled lineup since the departure of Dylan Kilgore and Evan Longoria. Their replacements, Ethan McCarthy and Colin Marston, pick up on guitar and bass, respectively, and prove that Withered is mighty as ever.

Grief Relic will be released by Season of Mist on May 27. It’s the group’s first record since 2010’s Dualitas came out on Prosthetic Records. Pre-orders are available via Bandcamp.

In support of their upcoming LP, Withered will embark on a summer tour with psychedelic sludge outfit Inter Arma. Unfortunately, the tour’s only Atlanta date—Aug. 2 at the EARL—arrives towards the backend of the month-long trek, so the face-melting will have to wait.
