Withered’s ability to channel multiple moods in a single track never ceases to amaze. The aggressive riffs on new single “Dissolve” are some of their heaviest yet, but the headbanger energy doesn’t interrupt the overarching atmosphere of gloom and introspective terror. It’s easy to overuse temperature-related terminology when analyzing Withered’s icy soundscapes, but the band has a seemingly innate power to cast a haunting pall with growled spells and blast beats, and the frigid textures of “Dissolve” are no different. The video, which features the band shredding on an abandoned stage in a disintegrating warehouse, deftly captures the madness of the band’s unique mix of black and death metal, all while under the watchful eye of an approaching cosmic apocalypse.
