I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing all this great quarantine music performed live. So many talented local artists have been hard at work during the pandemic, conjuring exciting new sounds. It’s a testament to their resilience and their passion for their craft. But let’s not overlook the small miracle of new projects forming during these difficult days. Wordy, for example, are taking their first big steps right now. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Will Pass (Sydney Eloise & the Palms, Slow Parade), Wordy’s music reframes familiar structures within a blend of rock, pop, and blues. The end effect is a kaleidoscope of color and beautiful noise.
The group’s debut single “Wild Guess” starts innocuously enough as a classic 16-bar blues stomp. But it isn’t long before you realize there’s something more compelling going on below the surface. Surrounded by a thumping groove, Pass’ vocals climb through the mix with devil-may-care energy as he combats regret with hopeful aspiration: “Let’s take a wild, wild guess / Wishing yesterday’s better but we always have tomorrow.”
Loose and invigorating, “Wild Guess” is a heartfelt expression of blue-sky dreaming with an undeniably ass-shaking beat. Or, as Wordy observes themselves, “The best chance of living / is living to the rhythm of love.” On second thought, “Wild Guess” is more than a big first step—it’s a confident strut into the future.
