There’s something deeply mystifying about “Depressing Twerk,” the second single from the enigmatic Atlanta artist grandma stuff. There’s no doubting the aura of melancholy that coats the track’s echoing chords, fluid bass lines, and crisp finger snaps, but there’s also a sense that it’s all being delivered with an ironic wink. According to a press statement, the project is “…inspired by being broke and lonely in Atlanta,” and while that sentiment lingers on the surface, there’s enough drug-addled reverie here to suggest an artist drifting dreamily through their own plaintive haze.

Shot and edited by CNN associate producer Fern Carpenter, the video offers a similar blend of the sad and surreal. Filmed on the BeltLine and downtown during last year’s Super Bowl, the footage focuses on grandma stuff rollerblading in a kind of stupefied daze, either alone or surrounded by a crowd of football revelers who aren’t quite sure what to make of his beguiling presence. As the track’s booming grooves slowly unfurl, the clip becomes something of a siren call, inviting the viewer to set aside their reservations and succumb to grandma stuff’s bewitching allure.
