Historically, rock music has often focused on youth and the jungle of hormonal changes that come along with it. It’s no mystery that many rock songs focus on the glorification of early sexual encounters, but most do so without addressing the shame that is often attached to them. For many, however, the reality of partaking in that first kiss or sexual act can be quite jarring and difficult to process. In a refreshing twist, Starbenders’ new single “Holy Mother” digs into the emotions behind creating a new physical connection. With the lyrics reading like an invocation, the track tries to bring relief to those experiencing this false shame. Instead of pushing for some generic take on sex, Starbenders address the core issue issue, saying it’s okay to examine and talk about our past as a way to move forward into the future.

“Holy Mother” not only shares this empowering message, but it’s also another infectious and explosive tune from Starbenders. The band has been turning heads with every new release, stepping up their game each time, and this latest one is no different. While the driving rhythms and sharp hooks suggest the group’s roots in glam rock and power-pop, the overall atmosphere feels darker and more complex as Starbenders continue to stretch their boundaries.

“There’s a lot of darkness and confusion that comes along with budding sexuality,” says vocalist and guitarist Kimi Shelter. “A lot of us keep our early experiences to ourselves because of a false sense of shame. A shame that grows and can stay with us for the rest of our lives. ‘Holy Mother’ is a moving prayer, asking for clarity in the midst of new sensations. Sometimes we feel the need to fight our urges, begging for the feelings to go away but also hoping they take over completely. When we recorded ‘Holy Mother,’ the band eerily mirrored the lyrics with a dark soundscape and pulsing performance.”
