Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: Every Friday our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over that week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.

Chick Wallace

Chick Wallace – “Boah”

From the standalone single

Melanie Paulos has often dubbed the gritty romps of Chick Wallace as “salty girl pop.” It’s usually just a funny moniker, but sometimes bitterness does drive the hook; that briny wit stems from a world-weariness that you could raise your PBR to. With meaty start-and-stop guitars, “Boah” stomps through two forms of undesirable desire: the hetero catcaller that doesn’t get the protagonist at all, and the needy old flame that understands all too much. Both are heady reminders of why romance is hardly ever the straightforward fairy tale overplayed in the media—the other party almost always has an end goal in mind when they slither over to your side. – Lee Adcock

Red Sea

Red Sea – “Jumprope”

From the forthcoming LP, Sugar & Spice

With a title like “Jumprope” you might expect a track that’s bouncy and fun. And the second single from Red Sea’s forthcoming debut full length, Sugar & Spice, is certainly a buoyant slice of perky synthpop, leaping forward with a seemingly endless barrage of distorted grooves and jittery rhythms. In different hands the song would most likely unravel into a convoluted mess, but Red Sea have always proven adept at shifting gears and navigating the most winding of terrains. – Avery Shepherd

Sugar & Spice is due out Feb. 22 via Truly Bald Records. Pre-orders are available here.

Red Sea will celebrate the release of Sugar & Spice on Sat., Feb. 23 at 529 alongside Locate S,1 and Paradise Montage. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8 in advance or $10 at the door. 21+ to enter.

Deep State

Deep State – “Time Unrivaled”

From the forthcoming LP, The Path to Fast Oblivion

The line between nostalgia and regret can be a blurry one. Even the warmest memories can carry rivulets of remorse; similarly, our most painful experiences often yield the greatest opportunities for joy and evolvement. On “Time Unrivaled,” Athens rockers Deep State reflect on this existential conundrum, exploring the way time and distance color our remembrances over a flurry of feverish guitars. – Guillermo Castro

The Path to Fast Oblivion is out Feb. 1, 2019 through Friendship Fever. Pre-orders are available here.
