Broken down into its most basic essentials, “Backsliding” is an amalgamation of everything Twin Criminal does well. Catchy and energetic with plenty of muscular guitars and dynamic grooves, the song comes galloping out of the gate and doesn’t relent until the final searing chord fades to silence. On a purely visceral level, it’s one of the trio’s most satisfying songs to date, an anthemic scorcher that is constantly morphing and shifting, seeking out bigger hooks and more emphatic riffs.

But as Twin Criminal has proven time and again, there’s more to their high-intensity assault than thunder and aggression. Although the lyrics can be a little difficult to discern against the band’s blistering din, the theme is one of pushing against pride and ego and how relationships can be destroyed when one party refuses to evolve and grow beyond pettiness and deceit. “You’ve got some nerve / I hope you never find it again,” goes the song’s central hook before the trio erupts in a cathartic breakdown.

According to previous statements from the band, “Backsliding” is the title track of the group’s forthcoming six-song EP, which the band aims to release before the year is out. So if you like what you hear, keep your fingers crossed for more new music soon. In the meantime, however, make sure to blast “Backsliding” below.

Twin Criminal will perform on Sat., Oct. 13 at 529 alongside Cusses, Holy Beach, and Shehehe. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8 in advance or $10 at the door. 21+ to enter.
