Alternating between wistful dreaminess and breezy propulsion, the new single from former Fake Flowers drummer Andy Barton, aka Reverie Rush, flutters and glides like cool autumn wind. The lead single from Barton’s upcoming EP, Beginners, “Run Its Course” also serves as the record’s closing track, a parting shot that helps summarize the emotional turmoil and existential crises that define the new project. Ultimately, it’s a song about mustering the strength to sever bad ties and embrace the peace of solitude, and although the jaunty pacing would seem to suggest some degree exultation, the atmosphere here is more one of calm reflection.

To help record the five songs that make up Beginners, Barton sought out assistance from former bandmates Jacob Chisenhall (Delorean Gray) and Freeman Leverett, but those hoping for a rehash of Fake Flowers’ mix of glimmering indie pop and shoegaze might be surprised to find a more nuanced songwriter that reveals himself in small doses rather than enveloping waves. Barton’s ongoing stint as a music critic for Flagpole, Impose Magazine, and others have made him, above all else, a conscientious and self-aware songwriter, and “Run Its Course,” while hinting at the DIY, home-recorded pop that emerged in the late aughts and earlier parts of this decade, showcases a willingness to strive for something deeper and more consummate.
