The latest single from the Hipps is a taste of sparkling indie pop and new wave mixed with lead singer Nate Cain’s earnest vocal charm. “Allison” picks up right where the group last left off with big choruses and confident swagger. Personally, it’s hard not to listen to the track and not hear a strong semblance to Elvis Costello’s 1977 gem “Alison.” Both cuts feature characters lacking agency and the Hipps’ chorus of “I would be waiting / on the other side” seems like a fairly logical extension to Costello’s striking declaration, “Alison, I know this world is killing you / Oh, Alison, my aim is true.” (Not mention how the song makes good use of a major chord chorus and dynamic guitar strums—both hallmarks of the English legend’s latent hit.) But mostly what the two tracks share in common is they’re each the kind of tight, hooky, and focused music that makes you want to hit replay again and again.

Give it a listen below.
