Now in its second year since its resurrection from a four-year absence in 2017, Nophest returns this weekend for another three days of righteous riffs, psychedelic vibes, and weirdo noise. Billed as an “all ages, diverse, intersectional, and interdimensional” music and arts festival, Nophest has always been a far-flung affair with a lineup that serves a broad spectrum of the local scene, and this year is no different. With well over 50 acts from a wide variety of genres scheduled to take the stage at Little Tree Art Studios in Avondale Estates, even the most demanding scenester should find something to appreciate.

If you’re looking for more established local acts to catch, names like Sash the Bash, Grand Prize Winners from Last Year, Dead Register, or Nerdkween may stick out the most, but a large part of what makes Nophest so vital is its willingness to make space for the fledgling musician. With a booking policy that allows most anyone to sign up and play, performances at the festival can sometimes be hit or miss, but it’s that same spirit of nonjudgmental open-mindedness that gives the event its welcoming, community-like atmosphere. Nophest has always felt more like a parade of small miracles and tiny disasters than a well-oiled machine, so if you’re searching for a glimpse of what makes the DIY underground so dynamic, you may want to make your way to Avondale Estates this weekend.
