Touring behind her mercurial debut Lost & Found, Jorja Smith will step into the spotlight with a headlining performance this Sunday evening at the Tabernacle. It’s been a meteoric rise for the 21-year-old English vocalist, who emerged out of relative obscurity after being featured on a pair of tracks from Drake’s 2017 mixtape, More Life. Since then, she’s appeared on the Black Panther soundtrack, collaborated with the likes of Kali Uchis and grime standout Preditah, all the while carving out her own unique and versatile aesthetic. Indeed, Lost & Found can only be loosely considered a pop record as Smith weaves in elements of everything from trip-hop and soul to jazz and dancehall across the album’s dozen captivating tracks.

It seems something of an old trope to declare that now is the time to see Jorja Smith, before she moves on to bigger stages and wider audiences. She certainly has an arena-sized voice and a mega presence to boot, although I’m not certain her tendency towards adventurous experimentation is built for the rigid demands of massive mainstream success. I could be wrong, of course, and in any case, it’s always thrilling to catch a rising star in the midst of their ascent. And in Smith’s case, it’s clear she’s certainly well on her way, with much higher ground still to climb.

Jorja Smith will perform on Sun., Dec. 9 at the Tabernacle. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $29.50. All ages.
