Measuring time by the ebb and flow of the local scene can be deceiving. On the one hand, it doesn’t feel all that long ago that we were premiering the debut single from Athens rockers Heffner. On the other, it’s been over six years since that introduction. I imagine part of that disconnect stems from the fact that the band has been a constant presence in Atlanta and Athens, releasing three albums and maintaining a busy tour schedule. Along the way, they’ve developed beyond a local favorite into a must-see act with a growing national footprint.

This month, Heffner look to continue their momentum when they drop their fourth album, Our Birthday Forever. Although the record is out July 17, there are few details surrounding the release. What we can say for sure, however, is the tracklist will feature new single “Cauterized Image.” A patiently-developing track with a bluesy Southern rock feel, the song extends Heffner’s already wide palette into something more tender and aching. The catchy hooks you’ve come to expect are still there, but the pacing is more subdued, the songwriting more sprawling. Calling it a slow burn seems apt, especially when the band cranks up the volume on the back half. All in all, it’s a strong, combustive effort from a group that continues to deliver.
