With all the praise that was heaped upon Omni’s 2016 debut, Deluxe, you could forgive the group for resting on their laurels and coasting on all the excitement and goodwill the LP generated. Instead the band comes barreling into 2017 with a pair of deliriously catchy cuts that has them firing on all cylinders. “Fever Bass” is the first of the two tracks, which will be released on a new 7-inch in late February. It’s a punchy, peppy post-punk jam full of spring-loaded guitars that sound like so many Roman candles firing off in succession.

At this point it’s become customary to write about the group’s taut rhythms and jagged, geometric grooves, but “Fever Bass” triumphs largely in part to Philip Frobos’ vocals. He’s never been a particularly strong or emphatic singer, but he understands implicitly when to hang back and when to latch himself to the group’s propulsive eruptions. Here he delivers one of his most commanding performances, lacing the track with phrase after infectious phrase. The result is a tightly wound tune that lives up to its title, while continuing Omni’s impressive streak of strong, impactful songwriting. It you slept on these guys last year, it’s about time you woke up.
