While it’s true that Nicholas Mallis is best defined as a pop artist, his songs tend to lean towards the quirky and idiosyncratic. That’s no big surprise given Mallis’ tenure as a sideman to both Cindy Wilson and Fred Schneider of The B-52s. But these days he’s more focused on his burgeoning solo career. In fact, over the past few years, he’s managed to carve out a unique niche in Athens on the strength of his eccentric songwriting and mystifying live shows.

Now, Mallis is preparing for the next step in his musical journey with the announcement of a new album and single. Entitled The Final Station, the new LP will be out April 24 via the Athens label Laser Brains.

The follow-up to 2019’s Artificial Irrelevance, the record promises to continue the artist’s exploration of weirdo pop and glam rock, albeit with a sci-fi twist. The album’s title track, which we’re excited to premiere today, sees Mallis channeling his inner Bowie with chugging guitars and atmospheric synths converging over a driving backbeat. At various points throughout the track, the music transitions from an earnest mid-tempo rocker into something dreamy, almost eerie. All in all, it’s an alluring dichotomy that’s reflective of the song’s space-bound protagonist.

“‘The Final Station’ is sung through the voice of someone on an expedition traveling away from an abandoned Earth, hoping to make it to another planet,” Mallis explains. “The verses are fragments of memories from their former life and glimpses of the in-flight entertainment. I was inspired to write it after watching Claire Denis’ The High Life, a Kubrickesque sci-fi film that came out last year. I had also been listening to a lot of Roxy Music and was influenced by Eno and all of his magic.”

Featuring eight tracks, The Final Station was recorded and produced by Mallis at his home studio and mastered at The Glow by engineer and producer Jesse Mangum. You can check out the cover art and full tracklist below.
