There is something delightfully off-the-cuff about “Hundertwasser,” the surprise new single from Newark Wilder. That’s not to say that it was written hastily or that it sounds thrown together; on the contrary, the track’s ambient swells and meditative flow, formless as they may be, have a permanence about them that help support the song’s diaphanous underpinnings. No, what I’m talking about is a kind of immediacy, a free-flowing dynamism that surfaces when one is able to surrender to the moment. Filled with lush textures and gorgeous tones, “Hundertwasser” is undoubtedly beautiful, but it’s the song’s loose and unselfconscious atmosphere that really draws you in.

Named after the Austria-born artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the track was written, recorded, and released by band founder Ben Kinzer late last week after returning home from a show. “It’s a mix of organ, mellotron, and Moondog samples,” Kinzer explains. “I put it out the next morning because I felt like it reflected the mood of the day well… We’ve been pretty hard at work on our last project so it was nice to just spontaneously release something in the course of one day.”

According to Kinzer, the group’s forthcoming record will be announced very soon, and while it won’t sound as airy and unstructured as “Hundertwasser,” the songwriting will feature “more sampling and manipulated sounds.” In the meantime, give a listen to the single below, and make sure to check out Newark Wilder tonight when the band plays an opening slot at the Earl.

Newark Wilder will perform tonight at the Earl in support of Tonstartssbandht and Shepherds. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $8. 21+ to enter.
