As if Matt Weiner wasn’t busy enough with his solo project TWINS and DKA centerpiece Pyramid Club, the DJ and producer just announced a new collaboration with experimental artist Ernestas Sadau on Elena Columbi’s new label Osàre! Editions. Weiner has always had a knack for hopping back and forth between dark pop and more angular techno and house, but as a member of Free Range, Weiner puts his boots firmly on the atmospheric side of the techno fence.
Osàre means bold or daring in Italian, and it’s hard to think of a better introduction for the label than this genre-splitting single from Free Range. At first listen, “Relax It’s Just Eggs” does perfect justice to its title, with Weiner and Sadau flipping, frying, scrambling, and cracking beats and samples with ease and abandon. The playful synth warbles and spacey hand percussion weave in and out of a more corrosive atmosphere, but even at its most intense, the wash of electronics is unable to drown the joyous sense of experimentation and slapstick surrealism that make the track more than just an exercise in nightclub intellectualism.
The duo’s debut LP, King of Snake, drops Sept. 15, and promises to reflect the complete sense of freedom one should expect from Weiner, Sadau, and Columbi. Pre-orders are available here.
