Sleek and sultry generally isn’t the vibe we get from Ethereal, but when you’re building a track for such luminous voices as possessed by 13casey and Venus, it’s time to glide into midnight mode. The Atlanta phenom has long remained a forward-thinking and versatile producer, and here he utilizes billowing synths and crisp drums to create an ambient backdrop that ripples and gleams with nocturnal allure. Part of Ethereal’s success as a prolific collaborator has been his willingness to surrender center stage to his creative partners, a trait that allows him to focus on smaller details and strategically usher in the atmosphere he wants rather than dominate the mix from the get-go. It’s impossible to listen to “Voices” and not be undone by the hypnotic vocals of his two compatriots. But listen closely and you can hear him putting his stamp on the track at every turn—a subtle glint of horns here, a feverish rattle of snares there. How the single will fit into the fabric of Ethereal’s upcoming Heat Death 4 remains to be seen, but we’re certainly excited to find out.
