If Dead Neighbors keep up like this, there won’t be any DIY spaces, bedrooms, or attics left in Athens in which they haven’t recorded. Their new two-song release was cut at the Pity Party, a house/yard venue in Normaltown which has hosted the likes of Deep State, Cicada Rhythm, and Oh, Rose. The result is a live energy which bursts from these two tracks.

“Longevity” and “Indifference” were both recorded in a day, and despite the lo-fi nature of the recordings, there is a tightness and creativity displayed which proves Dead Neighbors continue to push themselves towards a holistic interpretation of indie rock. Both tracks pull from shoegaze, surf, and even a smidge of math rock in a similar manner to the trio’s debut, Tell, but there is a richness and intricacy here which builds on the often sparse frames of the 2015 LP.

The comparisons to mid-’00s bands like Beach Fossils and Wavves are still applicable here, but Dead Neighbors continue to put their own spin on pop, especially evidenced by the deconstructed second half of “Indifference.” This poignant segment invokes more of a singer-songwriter vibe and seems like a promising move for the young band.
