Nearly three years since they disbanded, Cloudeater’s name still resonates within the Atlanta scene. Much of that has to do with the strength of the band’s songwriting, but a lot of it stems from members carrying on the legacy with new projects. The latest artist to emerge from the ashes is drummer Chris Hunt, who this week celebrates the release of his solo debut, Tomb. Produced in collaboration with vocalist Marshall Ruffin, guitarist Emil Werstler, and bassist/engineer John Davis, Hunt’s electronic compositions bear traces of industrial with jagged, staccato rhythms and grimy pulses of noise, but they can also be quiet and meditative. Like Cloudeater, he has a tendency toward the atmospheric and well-textured. His work is cinematic, but not in the sense that it recedes into the background; rather, it’s visceral music that demands a reaction as it builds a dark, futuristic world around you. This Friday night Hunt will lead a night of forward-leaning music at 529 with a stellar supporting cast that includes a collaborative set between Waking Astronomer beatsmith Deku and producer Saude, as well as a set from Clinton Callahan’s (Hello Ocho, Small Reactions) new project, Palmlines. Don’t sleep.
