If, like me, you’re hunkered down and practicing social distancing, then you’re probably spending a lot of time wondering when and how this nightmare is going to end. Governor Kemp’s disastrous decision to begin opening the state early has only added further furor and dread to an already bleak situation. Whatever hopes there were for containment are now likely dashed, prolonging the deadly effects of the pandemic.
But not everything is grim. Most of us are doing what we can to make the best of a horrific situation, utilizing our extra hours to dive into our passions or develop new talents. In the case of singer-songwriter Casey Harper, she’s using quarantine as an opportunity to self-release new music and flex her producer skills.
Her latest single is tailor-made for the kind of sun-kissed days we’ve been experiencing lately, even if its outlook isn’t so rosy. “Life In” is a breezy number about an unhealthy relationship: “And still you call me friend / and I hate the sound of it,” the narrator muses at one point. Musically, Harper builds tension and dynamic with a gentle tambourine, subtle handclaps, airy melodica, and her delicate voice. “Life In” takes you back to those 2003 twee pop of mix CD favorites like Rilo Kiley and Kimya Dawson. And there’s plenty more where that came from, too.
