Taking cues from contemporary hip-hop and R&B, Lolo Zouaï’s music is fully immersed in the current pop zeitgeist, but there’s something about her emotive vocals and the way she carries herself onstage that feels very much old-soul. The 24-year-old singer and rising star brought her High Highs to Low Lows tour to Aisle 5 last Tuesday, and while upbeat bops like “Caffeine” electrified the crowd and got the dance floor jumping, it was her ability to glide commandingly into swooning singles like “Brooklyn Love” and “Moi” that really lit up the night.
Performing in support was Windy City rapper and singer Jean Deaux, an emerging voice in her own right who managed to captivate the audience with her mix of gossamer soul and boisterous hip-hop. Rounding out the evening was opener Neila, whose set we unfortunately missed, but who was gracious enough to allow for a few backstage photos.
