Sounds Like: The soundtrack to a utopian future where humankind survives global warming and abandons automobiles for tricked-out hovercrafts fueled by solar-powered subwoofers and space-age funk (hey, it could happen). These gleaming soundscapes may be rooted in the past (shades of ‘80s pop and soul, ‘90s rap and R&B), but stick with them long enough and you may catch a glimpse of what’s to come.
Releases: Watson’s new EP, No Love Lost, Volume 1, was released on Nov. 30, 2017 via Bandcamp. The five-song effort is the follow-up to his 2012 debut [Neptune].
Mandatory Listening: Admittedly, it’s a small sample size, but I can’t imagine a better entry point into Watson’s retro futurist aesthetic than lead cut, “Red Moon.” The sleek contours of his cosmic funk and hip-hop glide by with such vivid abandon you can’t help but get locked into the track’s deep, undulating grooves. For the moment, Watson is a more compelling rapper than he is a singer, but his performance here shows promise, and with Volume 2 due out as early as next month, who knows what evolutions lie in store.
