So there’s a backlog of things I’ve been meaning to write about but haven’t been able to get to, because, y’know, work-life-stress. Leading the pack is the latest single and video from worlds greatest dad, which finds the Atlanta four-piece pushing their melodic indie rock and emo into headier, more ambitious territory. The band’s driving guitars and swelling dynamics remain thoroughly intact, but bandleader Maddie Duncan seems more comfortable putting her faults and conflicted emotions on display as the song traces the difficulties of maintaining an honest, intimate relationship without first coming to terms with your own fears and insecurities. It’s the first piece of new music we’ve heard from the group since they announced their signing to Deep Rest Records (Bobby Barnett), who will release the band’s debut full length get well soon in May.

Directed by James Hunt, the video follows the tumultuous relationship between two women (and their respective dogs), who fall into a whirlwind romance that quickly slips into codependency. What starts as an enviable union built on happiness, deep passion, and mutual attraction, dissolves into anger and confusion as the pair’s attached-at-the-hip devotion becomes smothering. After separating, however, and taking the time needed to think through their own needs and desires, the women are able to reconcile, presumably in a better space and mindset to move forward in their love.
