In the age of Trump, it’s tempting to read most every work of art that delves into themes of rebellion, transgression, and resistance as an indictment, metaphorical or otherwise, on the much reviled and embattled president. On his latest single and video, however, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter Christopher Brooker, better known as Where Are We, leaves no doubts as to his intentions and beliefs. “Not My President” is a scathing protest song that disavows Trump’s regressive agenda and autocratic overtures while taking inspiration from art-prog auteurs like Tame Impala and Abacab-era Genesis.
Directed by filmmaker and frequent collaborator Tim Reis, the accompanying video examines the emotional and psychological damage caused by the president’s cynical media manipulation and seemingly endless stream of heinous words and actions. In it, an amorphous, faceless man wakes up for work only to be bombarded by an increasingly vitriolic news cycle that causes him to have a nervous breakdown and retreat into the woods. Only there, in the relative seclusion and peace of nature, does he finally regain a sense of meditative calm and self-identity.
