By all accounts, 2015 has been a quiet year for Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun. Prior to tonight’s performance at the Drunken Unicorn, the electro rock quartet have played just a single show in 2015, opening for Stokeswood and Jungol at the former group’s record release show in June. And up until last Monday, there no new music to speak of, either. But then came the surprise unveiling of new single “Turn It All Around,” followed quickly by an accompanying video release, and suddenly here we are with TTMTTS storming back onto the scene.
It’s unclear whether “Turn It All Around” is a one-off single or the beginning of a build-up to something bigger, but it’s certainly as polished and poppy (not to mention cooly confident) as we’ve heard the band sound. For a song that was casually dropped on Facebook with little fanfare, the track has some seriously sticky hooks and kind of bubbling, buzzing warmth that’s requisite for any feel-good summertime anthem. Lauren Gibson’s expressive vocals have always been the emotional fulcrum for the group’s spirited, dance-ready dynamics, and here she sounds positively radiant, gliding over the track’s pulsing synths with an ease that accentuates the song’s breezy vigor.
As for the video, visually there’s not much to it. Director Jason A. Brown breaks up the screen into various quadrants which he populates with footage of the band either performing or interacting directly with the camera. It’s a technique that’s been used many time before, but some smart editing and the band’s loose energy helps keep the pace lively and moving. Watch/listen above.
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun will perform tonight at the Drunken Unicorn in support of the Velvet Teen. Fellow local Dark Room opens the show. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 DOS.
