The best part about “Rope,” the new single and video from exciting newcomers the Threats, is that it’s a song made up entirely of best parts. So many metalcore bands rely on chaos and cacophony to fill in the gaps between individual song segments, but even at its most frenetic, the band’s latest single is a nonstop parade of killer riffs and contagious melodies. For all its frantic energy, breakneck guitars, stop-on-a-dime dynamics, and scream-along vocals, the band keeps reaching into their deck of cards and firing out aces. It even features guest vocals from the Callous Daoboys’ Carson Pace to throw more tinder onto the fire.

Directed by Zak Washburn, the video does an enviable job of matching the song’s blistering intensity. With its assemblage of jittery, rapid-fire jump cuts, the live portions streak by at a whirlwind pace. Meanwhile, the narrative footage blends action thriller mystique (the band bound with blindfolds, frontman Bryan Taylor scrambling to escape an unknown assailant) with absurdist humor (that teeny garage, y’all!) to help coat the song in a veneer of unruly intrigue. Overall, it’s a captivating tour-de-force that’s a blast to watch and listen to, and another strong signal that the Threats need to be on your radar.
