It only makes sense that the Coathangers are pairing their upcoming live album with a new live video. The bigger question is why, in 2018, a band which was borne out of Atlanta’s DIY punk scene in the late ’00s is releasing a live record at all. The decision makes a bit more sense considering how the group’s audience has expanded exponentially since they released Suck My Shirt in 2014. Now the band is in a place where, frankly, their fans are old enough not to blink when purchasing a live album. However, I think the real catalyst for the record’s inception was quite simply the group’s close bond with their longtime imprint Suicide Squeeze, a label which has repeatedly shown a willingness to follow through on whatever the band wants—a rare quality in the current music industry climate.

Directed by Matt Odom, the video features some straightforward shots of the band rocking out at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, CA where they cut the audio for the upcoming record. It’s doubtful that this will change anyone’s opinion of the band—whether they appreciate the tenacity with which the Coathangers have stuck to their garage punk guns, or whether they think the band is stuck in a musical rut—but there’s no denying that for this video, the band focused up their frantic rock and roll into something memorable, capturing the same chaotic energy which made “Hurricane” a standout track on their 2011 LP Larceny & Old Lace.

LIVE is out June 1 via Suicide Squeeze Records. Pre-orders are available here.
