There’s a reason people say practice makes perfect. Yeah, it’s of those adages adults say mindlessly to get you to work on your scales or to get better at shooting free throws or whatever, but there’s no doubting the truth in the words. And while I can’t say that Satyr are in actual perfect form on their new single “Picayune,” I will go out on a very short limb and say holy shit! have these guys been putting in the work.

While the progressive post-hardcore outfit successfully merged melody and dazzling technical prowess on their 2018 Neutrino! EP, this feels, I don’t know, entirely next level. From the song’s opening blast, the foursome are locked and loaded, rattling off explosive riffs, hyper-kinetic grooves, and breathtaking breakdowns, all with blistering intensity. The sound may be familiar, but everything about it—from the performance to the production—has been considerably enhanced. The hooks are bigger, the songwriting is sharper, the playing is tighter… you get the point. Satyr sound every bit like a band on a mission and “Picayune” is their rallying cry.

Directed, filmed, and edited by Zak Waddle, the video initially feels like an afterthought to the juggernaut that is the single, but then you realize that watching Satyr shred and calmly lasso this lightning bolt is half the fun. The kaleidoscopic animations are a cool touch and all, but who are we kidding? The real magic is seeing them put all that practiced pyrotechnics to use.
