If the ethos of hardcore can be loosely defined as the intersection of energy and emotion, post-hardcore adds to those elements both a sense of tunefulness and a dynamism that’s generally more technical in nature. Atlanta four-piece Satyr certainly approach their craft with those qualities in mind, churning out frenetic songs that combine melody and momentum with mosh-worthy riffage. It’s not a new formula, to be sure, but the band plays with the urgency and exuberance you want from the genre, and with a considerable degree of skill and flair to boot.

Directed by Edward Tumulty, Satyr’s new video for “Andromeda,” the lead single from the group’s debut EP, Neutrino!, keeps things relatively simple, focusing it’s attention squarely on the band as they perform the song within the confines of an empty room. It’s a scene which Satyr has lived through hundreds of time, I’m sure, as they rehearsed their set for an impending show, or sorted out the details and transitions of a new song. The viewer, in this sense, becomes something of a fly on the wall, watching the group rip through the song with abandon, and getting a close-up view of their dazzling technical prowess in the process.

Satyr will perform on Mon., June 25 at Gallery 992 alongside Outrun the Sunlight, Aviations, and Things Amazing. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $10. All ages.
