The high-octane new single and video from RobOlu is a stark contrast to his prior release, the R&B-inflected “Tweakin’.” In a hooded sweatshirt and button up, the Atlanta rapper braves the wintry environment to pay homage to Ruth’s Chris Steak House, a chain of over 100 steakhouses across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The restaurant is regarded as an upscale, fine dining establishment, marking a gradual elevation in its status since its founding in the 1960s.
Besides all of that, Ruth’s Chris is generally a mouth-watering treat for any meat lover. But the video feels as if it’s deeper than expressing an appreciation for custom-aged USDA Prime midwestern beef. Beef, with all of its storied connotations in hip-hop, has had its fair share of days in rap’s history books. Today, it’s RobOlu vehemently saying he’s eating steak after a lifetime of struggle. Metaphors in hip-hop are always fun to uncover because they are mostly rooted in competition, and while there aren’t any specific callouts or clapbacks here, RobOlu makes sure to let you know he’s leveling up. Along the way, he delivers one of the best sounding vocals amongst all of Atlanta’s next wave of rappers, and the video shot by VTapeKen captures the artist in his element.
