Atlanta’s the Difference Machine are nothing if not prodigiously generous with their remixes. As evidence, just look to the group’s two full lengths, both of which have yielded corresponding remix LPs (2014’s The Psychedelic Sounds of the Remix Machine and 2017’s Triangle Schemes, respectively) featuring a small cadre of underground rappers and producers from this city and beyond. That spirit of evolution and collaboration has on occasion extended to their videos, and today’s premiere is yet another example of the Difference Machine’s willingness to trust their friends and colleagues to chop up and reinterpret their work.

Created by Colin Mulligan, the remixed video takes director Tim Reis’ mix of tripped-out footage and mad scientist/Dr. Frankenstein visuals and slams them through a distorted prism of hazy filters and sharp-angled fractals. While the new version strips some of the narrative continuity of the original, it does have the added benefit of allowing the viewer to zone out and get lost within rappers DT and Paten Locke’s immersive flows and cerebral rhyme schemes. Which version you prefer is entirely up to you, of course, but from where I’m standing it looks like a fair trade-off.
