The inescapably perky grooves that course their way through Nicholas Mallis’ new single “Habitable World” are a joy to hear unfold. It’s that sort of vintage, dance-forward pop and rock (his presser labels it “glam pop”) that demands movement from the listener as each bounding note and playful melody seems to strike with gleeful abandon. Mallis, who has spent his time in Athens performing in bands like Viking Progress and Yo Soybean, and has backed Cindy Wilson and Fred Schneider of the B-52s, has generally reserved a more amusing and absurdist streak for his solo work, and “Habitable World,” the lead single from his forthcoming full length Artificial Irrelevance, certainly falls into that trend.

The accompanying video, which we’re excited to premiere for you today, was directed by Patrick Morales of fellow Athens group Grand Vapids. Considering that, according to Mallis, the track is based off the idea that we all have alien twins lurking out in the universe, it seems appropriate that the footage take on a cosmic and psychedelic bent. But the end result, which features that artist dancing merrily while said imagery projects behind him, is ultimately more lively and euphoric than it is surreal.

Artificial Irrelevance is out Apr. 8 via Laser Brains.

Nicholas Mallis & the Borealis will perform on Fri., Feb. 15 at Flicker Theatre & Bar alongside Curt Castle (Record Release) and Velveteen Pink. Doors open at 9 p.m.
