The week after Christmas, I took some time to catch up on my comfort media: David Sedaris books, Nancy Myers movies, and model train videos. For me, revisiting art is not about the nostalgic clinging to the past. It’s more about measuring the self I thought I was back then against the self I think I am now and the countless ways these things influenced my personality. It’s about growth. And knowing what a total dork I am.

For many people, shows like Gilmore Girls function similarly. It’s the kind of nineties TV aesthetic where you can get a fluffy pancake stack and a just-good-enough coffee cup while visiting the little hideaway known as Stars Hollow. The type of place where a carefree innkeeper and a gruff diner owner could be relationship goals.

At least that’s how I assume it is for Emily Backus, the brainchild behind Mom Friend. Taken off the project’s new EP, Cost of Living, “Luke Danes” is a swooning cut that blends throwback doo-wop with heart-tugging lyricism. If—like me—you’ve got a sticky sweet soft spot for complex love songs, you’ll find yourself drawn deep by the track’s gentle wallowing.

Created by Sabrina Guyton, the animated lyric video is chock full of whimsical Easter eggs about the show. According to Backus, the single “is just a good old-fashioned love song, inspired in large parts by its namesake and his relationship with Lorelei on Gilmore Girls. The video adds to that tribute by using imagery from the show (the karaoke scene, Lorelei’s jeep, Paul Anka the dog, etcetera).”
