Last November, Maggie Schneider shared “Mixed Signals,” a vibrant, pulsing single that took her catchy pop-rock in exciting new directions. As a meditation on the complexities of love and relationships, the track resonated with those of us who struggle to interpret the muddled signals we often receive in the course of dating. Today, we’re excited to premiere the accompanying visuals, which further illuminate the thorny issues Schneider raises on the track.

Directed and edited by Deanna Elise, the video is a single take examination of the many faces of love and the importance of honest and open communication. Shot at Ebrik Coffee Room in downtown Atlanta, the clip opens by introducing three pairs of lovers—one a new match meetup between two men, one a couple sharing a smoothie, and another with Schneider as she confronts her significant other about his highly suspect social media activity. Each couple experiences a different aspect of a relationship, from the early romantic pangs to watching it dissolve with heartbreak. The plots twists may be familiar, but that’s what makes them powerful: there’s something here we can all connect with.

“We wanted to highlight how much people give and receive mixed signals every day, and the difficulties we have communicating with each other,” Schneider explains. “Deanna and I wanted the video to feel like a movie where three couples were undergoing different mixed signals in real-time. It was shot all in one take, which we all thought was super cool. Deanna brought the song to life, while also promoting inclusivity. Love is love, and we wanted people of all backgrounds and sexual orientations to relate to it.”

Maggie Schneider will perform on Sat. Jan. 18 at the Masquerade alongside Jake Marquis of Sleep On It and Carter Hardin of Chapel (DJ Sets), Cardiac Half, and Say Hello Sunday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $12. All ages.
