Macon rockers Fooligans call their style of music grunge pop, which is really just a way of saying they like their pop a little on the dirty and distorted side. That or they prefer their rock a little cleaner and catchier—take your pick. In either case, their new single is a snappy and propulsive little number that has as much in common with ’60s garage and surf rock as anything else. If the band threw in a little Farfisa organ, we might have ourselves a genuine throwback, but instead the boys keep the guitars rolling and drive headlong into the fist-pumping chorus. It feels a bit like standard operating procedure, but with so much bouncy energy flying about, you hardly notice.

Directed by Jack Gordon, the video’s lo-fi look and choreographed shots help accentuate the song’s old-school vibe. It’s mostly just performance footage set against a multi-color backdrop (and a few frames of an adorable cat), but once again the song’s spunky intensity helps pull it through. Watch/listen above.

Fooligans’ self-titled debut is out June 29.

Fooligans will perform tonight at Fresh Produce Records alongside BOGO. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is FREE. All ages.
