So much of Nihilist Cheerleader’s energy is bound to the stage, so they chose to drop their newest track in the form of a live video. “Fine” is a blistering slice of sweaty punk that features vocalist/guitarist Flynne Collins’ most commanding vocal performance yet. Her machine gun delivery ticks like a time bomb ready to blow up frat culture. The four-piece’s taut instrumentation is a gust of fresh air in a music scene that’s often too sunny and psychedelic for its own good.
The two-minute rager was recorded at an Athens’ house venue known to locals as the Pity Party. Normaltown resident and videographer Taylor Chicoine started the Pity Party Social Club after he graduated from UGA in 2013 as a way to ensure that Athens’ vibrant music scene would be catalogued for future generations. This isn’t Nihilist Cheerleader’s first visit to the venue’s backyard stage (they performed another unreleased track, “Shark Fin Soup” at the Pity Party earlier this year), but the nighttime shoot and Collins’ blindfolded antics are a perfect fit for the new song.
“Fine” isn’t just evidence that Nihilist Cheerleader can keep up with their own songwriting in a live environment, it’s also proof that the young band is continuing to push their creative boundaries and explore every possible facet of speedy Riot Grrrl punk without losing any of their political energy or youthful angst.
