For those who have been following Kristen Englenz, you may remember “Rebound” from the singer-songwriter’s debut EP, Extent of Play. Take a seat, though. This isn’t the “Rebound” you remember. Whereas the original was a gossamer confessional, this version is a muscled-up barn burner, a B-12 shot of righteous anger where Englenz sneers about the fallout of being a rebound. “Do you blame me for wanting to give you it all?” she asks as the song barrels through with enough with nerve and grungy energy to make you forego that second cup of coffee.

Directed by Eric Englert, the video is a one-shot affair with dramatic lighting that shifts from white to boiling red. Colin Agnew (drums), Matthew Pendrick (guitar), and Robby Handley (bass) join Englenz, defiantly strutting through the background. In the end, the group tears away in a revving Mercedes convertible to break some more hearts.

“This song was me trying to grapple with a space I’d never personally been in before,” Englenz says. “We’re always a bit out of control when we’re in love. That’s part of the thrill. The scariest thing is when we find out we’re falling out of control alone. Being someone else’s rebound was spinning in this space.”

Englenz continues: “That’s where ‘It’s half my fault for the hookup, and all on me for the fall’ comes from. The result was me literally laying on my floor crying, picking up a guitar, and covered in tears, sitting criss-cross-applesauce, writing the fastest song to ever come out of me. Like all of my songs, [it] was my therapy, my way of beginning to understand the many shades of the gray space. It’s been so special to see how people have connected to ‘Rebound’ to find their own healing. It’s honestly not something I ever could have imagined accomplishing through songwriting, but it’s a gift which has been given to me through other’s music over and over again.”
