This past weekend, Jay Americana shared the video for “Pop Song,” one of the bouncier cuts from the Atlanta rapper’s mid 2017 project, folder. Animated by Neptune Prince, the visuals augment the song’s themes of ennui and excess by immersing the viewer in a pseudo-futuristic world where robotic women gyrate and dance while prescription pills rain down from above. Casual cool is central to Jay Americana’s delivery, so when the opening hook bubbles into the mix (“Up all night, I ain’t trying to feel shit / Two pills didn’t work so I had to pop six”), it’s easy to shrug it off as emblematic of self-indulgence. But it’s precisely that air of nonchalance that makes it so disarming. After all, pleasure is easy, but how do we cope when everything seems fake and nothing much matters?
