If there’s such a thing as a low-key member of the Awful Records squad, it’s probably Ethereal. While the local rapper and producer has often proven adept at navigating the modern hip-hop terrain of minimalist trap, glitch-based beats and airy sythns, he seems most comfortable when he’s digging through crates and incorporating old-school soul into his sample-based production. The results are more laid-back and chill then turnt up, leading to a nostalgic-leaning aesthetic that feels classic but never dated.
Such is the case with “Eraser,” the lead single from his upcoming I Think I’m On Fire 2, due out later this year. The woozy, hypnotic cut was released at the end of September, and has now finally received the video treatment from director GAHM. Much like the visuals for the record’s second single, “Much More” (also directed by GAHM), the action here is fairly mundane, essentially jumping back and forth between shots of Ethereal spitting in a clearing in the woods and him rapping on a stoop all while hanging with a young woman clad in white who is sipping on a bottle of Sutter Home wine. There’s a bit of visual trickery with split screens and color filters, but, for the most part, this shift in scenery is all there is. It’s probably not worth many repeat viewings but, hey, at least we have the track’s indelible hook and Ethereal’s syrupy flow to fall back on.
