We’re slowly creeping up on a year since Dead Register released their Captive EP, and the Atlanta doomgaze trio are showing no signs of halting the promotional cycle. Their latest addition to the cause is the video for “Ender,” which premiered last week on CVLT Nation. For my money, the track is one of the more compelling efforts from the record, taking the group’s signature gothic metal and layering it with a heavy dose of atmospheric melody. For a song so seemingly dark, it’s surprisingly easy on the ears, highlighting the group’s ability to take grim subjects and treat them with heart.

Directed and edited by Dead Register’s own Avril Che, the video takes its inspiration from Che’s love of science-fiction as well as the work of stop-motion artist and filmmaker Jan Svankmajer. There’s no direct narrative to speak of, but the grimy industrial backdrop and the subjects’ unnatural movements help inject the footage with an aura of bleak tension. All in all it’s a mesmerizing watch. Or better said, it’s yet another triumph for a band who deserve more attention than they’ve received.

Dead Register will perform on Mon., Aug. 26 at the Bakery alongside Silence in the Snow, Thief, and Ravel. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $7. All ages.
