Filmed and recorded live at Big Trouble Recording, the latest video from Brother Hawk shows the Atlanta mainstays at their electrifying best. The band has always been most potent when serving up a fiery concoction of soul-stirring blues and grimy alt-rock, and “Like Water” ably checks both off the list. In the process, the group manages to make their tried-and-true Southern grooves sound more expansive and expressive.

It’s hard not to credit much of that growth to vocalist and guitarist J.B. Brisendine. His voice here sounds positively radiant, even as he details the pain and struggle that form the song’s emotional core. But in listening to “Like Water” swell and surge in increasingly turbulent waves, it’s clear Nick Johns-Cooper (keys/vocals), James Fedigan (bass), and Evan Diprima (drums) are equally responsible for shaping Brother Hawk into something bigger and more transportive. Still, it’s not so much an evolution as it is the sound of a band leaning further into their identity and operating at the peak of their powers.

Watch/listen above.

“Like Water” is the first track to be revealed off the group’s Big Trouble Sessions EP, out Nov. 8. Yesterday, the band shared a teaser for their cover of Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell,” a track which seems to sit squarely within Brother Hawk’s wheelhouse. The full video is scheduled to drop tomorrow, so you won’t have to wait long to get a taste of what else the band has up their sleeves.
