I can’t believe I’ve allowed a full month to pass without posting something about “Nothing Like I Thought.” As a single, it follows much in the vein of what Big Jesus have excelled in the past: spring-loaded riffs, atmospheric hooks, ripping guitar solos. But that’s not to say the lead track from the group’s new EP Not a Dreamer is predictable or formulaic. On the contrary, the dynamic cut manages to distill the group’s shot-out-of-a-cannon verve down to its essence, resulting in one of band’s most thrilling efforts yet.

Directed, shot, and edited by frequent collaborator Jason Travis, the accompanying video manages to manages to channel all that high-sprung energy into something fun and whimsical, while taking a poke at our screen obsessed culture. In it, a group of alien rockers follow their dream to bring cosmic jams to the people of Earth, only to discover that humans are more concerned with staring at their phones and tracking social media than they are witnessing an extraterrestrial band tear up the stage. It’s a clever concept that would be a lot funnier if it didn’t hit so close to the truth.

Not a Dreamer is available now via Bandcamp.
